TWO BATTLE REENACTMENTS EACH DAY
Free Admission
On September 12-13, 2009, historians and reenactors from Texas and Louisiana will gather at Sabine Pass Battleground to bring to life incidents from the Civil War along the upper Texas Gulf Coast. This is one of the few battlefields in the country where visitors can hear the guns and smell the smoke from artillery pieces fired on the actual ground where a battle took place. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring the whole family and tour a Confederate army camp and hear the incredible stories of the soldiers and civilians of the era. Cross the battlefield and hear the stories of Union soldiers and sailors. See the armies in action during two battle reenactments each day. A food vendor and sutlers will be available for your convenience.
At 11:00am on Saturday, the Texas Historical Commission will formally reopen Sabine Pass Battleground, which has been closed for an extended period to repair damage from recent storms. Following this program, the Jefferson County Historical Commission will honor the men who fought and died on both sides in a ceremony sure to inspire all who attend. The Living History activities and battle reenactments are being coordinated by Dick Dowling Camp 1295 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. If you would like to participate as a reenactor or have a question about the program, please contact:
